The SVCA Patriots started off the 2017 season with a big win against James Wood High School Monday night. SVCA was able to get on the board first when SVCA strung several passes together before eventually hitting the ball into Hannah Max. The senior midfielder hit a beautiful one-touch pass to Leah Goben. Goben took a brilliant touch on the ball around her defender and immediately attacked the Colonels' goal. Goben hit a low-driven shot into the back of the net giving the Patriots their first goal of the season.
The lead was not meant to be, however, as just minutes later SVCA would concede the equalizer and give up a scrappy goal to the Colonels. With about ten minutes left in the first half, SVCA would take the lead again off a corner kick. Mariah Baihly played a perfectly placed ball into the box and saw Hannah Max aggressively attack the ball out of the air and redirect it to the opposite post to give the Patriots the 2-1 lead going into the half.
The Patriots would give away the lead once again when the Colonels were awarded a penalty kick due to a handball in the box. Once the game was tied, the Colonels really picked up the intensity and began to apply more pressure. The SVCA backline handled the pressure with calmness and composure not allowing another goal.
Hannah Max would score the game-winner with about 20 minutes to play when she picked up a loose ball and fired a shot from about 20 yards away and into the goal.
Sarah Max gave the Patriots some breathing room when she put the game away with about 4 minutes left on the clock. The sophomore forward received a pass and quickly beat her defender off the dribble. Max then would fire a bullet from well outside the box and into the back of the net.
The Patriots return to action on Thursday when they travel to Sherando High School to face-off against the Warriors. Kick-off is set for 7:00pm.
